Script This script relies
on the relationships and underlying the conflicts between the actors, director, and stage
manager of the struggling Robert Armin Theatre Company in Chicago. Theatre and Shakespeare
fans will love the references to a life in the theatre, and to the Bard of Avon, and
everyone will enjoy this funny, creative mystery. Although scripted to be set in the
1940's, it can be adapted to many different time periods.
Setting The setting is
whatever hotel, board room, or restaurant we happen to be in, used as a temporary
performance space while the Robert Armin acting troupe's theatre is being renovated.
The decor, appropriate period costumes, and set pieces all emphasize the time
period chosen, and the dress rehearsal theatrical atmosphere. On a stage or in the
center performance space are set pieces for the staging of Hamlet. Other
dress rehearsal props are distributed throughout the room. Lighting can be used to
create mood and space, or the lack of it cam be indicative of the struggling nature of the
company. Music from the period is performed live, or piped through a
"radio" during food service to create atmosphere.
Characters John Barryless / Hamlet Alcoholic and
bitter. Too old to be playing Hamlet. Harold Faber / Claudius Meek, nervous accountant.
Eavesdropper. Rex Lexington / Laertes Always on stage. Silky
voice, very good looking. Bruce Billingsley / Horatio Quirky. Always doing
impressions. Can't act. Inspector Jacques Cloules More clever than Clouseau, but
same accent. Policeman Stereotypical tough guy Chicago cop. Priscilla Wynewright / Osric 20's. Pretentious and
beautiful, shrill and whiny. Lulu Truegrip Young, boyish stage manager. Shy and
scared, but a smart cookie. Anathea Ashton / Gertrude Pompous English theatre diva,
been around a while. Max Von Kugelschreiber Flamboyant German director.
Eyepatch, moustache, something else is just ... not right.
